Frequently Asked Questions

What style of music do you play?

We play a variety of musical arrangements to suit almost any occasion. This includes March music (in the style of John Phillip Sousa), Patriotic, Big Band, Dixieland, Christmas, and traditional concert music.

What are some examples of your engagements?

The band has established some regular occurring engagements over the years, playing a wide variety of music to fit the occasion, with concerts

in the Ceredo-Kenova, Huntington, and Ashland communities. The band has also had the honor of serving as the Pep Band for Marshall University basketball games when the University’s band is out for the holiday season winter break.

What are the costs of being a member?

Over the years the band has been fortunate to receive donations from

various individuals and groups to cover our costs. Because of this, there is only a $12 a year membership fee as required by the band’s by-laws. We supply you with copies of music at no cost. You will need to purchase a uniform top from the band, which costs around $30. You will also need to purchase white pants as part of the band’s uniform requirement and white shoes. Most members wear white tennis shoes.

I don’t have a musical instrument right now; what are my options?

Depending on which instrument you play, we may have one on hand that you can temporarily use until you can find and purchase one.

Is it mandatory that I attend ALL practices and performances?

The C-K Alumni Band was formed for both the enjoyment of the

musicians and the audiences we play for. We understand that many people have busy lives. With that in mind we want your experience with the band to be a rewarding one. We encourage you to come to as many practices as you can. This is so you’ll be familiar with the music, and to ensure that everyone plays well together. When asked by a group or organization for the band’s appearance members vote by majority if we wish to participate. Once a majority says yes we owe it to the audience to have as many

members present as possible. If you should have a last minute

commitment or an unforeseen situation arises, please contact your

section leader to let him/her know you cannot make it.

That all sounds great, but I’m a little apprehensive about joining.

Hey, we’ve all been there! You’re about to meet the friendliest, most

accommodating bunch in the area. When some of us joined (after not

having played for many years) we had our share of squeaks and missed notes. That’s to be expected! If you’d like to join, why not stop by on a Monday night and get to know us. You can also email us and let us know in advance when you plan on coming by. We’ll have someone greet you and introduce you to the members.
